The short answer

A blocked toilet plumber clears a blocked toilet pan and the waste pipe behind it, finds out why it blocked and tests the flush before leaving. Most single-toilet blockages are cleared in one visit. If the blockage is in an outside or shared drain, the plumber will say so. Nobel Build & Repairs covers Central London and areas up to about 50 miles away.

Urgent, same day or can it wait?

Not every blocked toilet is an emergency, but some are. The quickest way to decide is to look at what the water is doing and whether you have another toilet to use. The table below turns that into a simple call: ring now, book for today, or try the basics first.

What a blocked toilet plumber does on a visit

People often assume a plumber arrives, plunges once and leaves. A proper visit has more to it, because the aim is to stop it happening again as well as to clear the pan.

  1. Questions first. We ask when it started, what has been flushed, and whether other fittings are slow. Running a nearby basin or bath tells us a lot about where the problem sits.
  2. Clearing the pan. A toilet plunger or hand auger works the blockage loose through the trap. Most single-toilet blockages that are not caused by a solid object clear at this stage.
  3. Testing properly. We flush several times and watch the water level, then check the cistern fill and flush valves so the toilet has enough flush volume to carry waste away.
  4. Tidying and explaining. We leave the floor clean and tell you what caused it and what to change.

One honest limit: we work on indoor toilets, sinks and waste pipes. We do not carry out CCTV drain surveys or drain relining. If the blockage turns out to be in an outside or shared drain, we say so and point you to the right company, rather than charging you for a job we cannot finish.

Why a toilet keeps blocking

A toilet that blocks once is usually down to what was flushed. A toilet that blocks every few weeks usually has a second cause underneath. These are the ones we find most often.

  • Wipes and “flushable” products. Water UK has found that wipes make up most of the material in sewer blockages. Even wipes sold as flushable do not break down like toilet paper.
  • Too little flush. Water-saving cisterns use less water per flush. If the fill valve or flush valve is worn, the flush can be too weak to carry waste along the pipe.
  • Limescale. London and the South East have hard water. Scale can build up around the rim jets and inside the trap, narrowing the path.

The fix is usually simple. Keep a small bin in the bathroom for wipes and sanitary items, flush twice when you have used a lot of paper, and have a plumber check the cistern if the flush has gone weak. Never mix cleaning products in a blocked toilet, as some combinations release harmful fumes.

What affects the price of a blocked toilet plumber

Published 2026 UK price guides put simple toilet unblocking at roughly £50 to £200, with London usually towards the upper end. That is a wide range because the job itself varies so much. These are the factors that move the price.

FactorHow it affects the price
Time of dayEvenings, weekends and short-notice jobs usually cost more than a weekday booking.
How the blockage is clearedA plunger or hand auger at the pan is quicker than lifting the toilet to reach the trap.
AccessA boxed-in pipe or a tight cloakroom takes longer to work in.
Repeat blockagesIf the toilet keeps blocking, finding the cause takes extra time and may mean a pipe or connector repair.
Where the blockage isBlockages in an outside or shared drain are a different job and may be the water company’s or building owner’s responsibility.

We cannot give an honest fixed figure before seeing the toilet, so we agree a written price once we know what the job involves. For more on pricing language, see our guide to what “no call-out charge” really means.

  • Is the work guaranteed? Ask for a workmanship guarantee in writing.

Your questions

Blocked toilet plumber: common questions

What does a blocked toilet plumber do?expand_more

A blocked toilet plumber clears the blockage from the pan and the waste pipe behind it, finds out why it happened and tests the flush before leaving. If the cause is a worn cistern valve or a poorly fitted pan connector, they can fix that too, so it does not keep returning.

How quickly can a blocked toilet plumber get to me in London?expand_more

Our phone lines are answered from 8am to 5pm every day, and urgent jobs are handled 24/7. Arrival time depends on where you are and how busy we are. Give your postcode when you call and we will tell you what is realistic.

Do you cover my area?expand_more

We cover Central London and areas up to about 50 miles from it, including parts of Surrey, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Essex and Kent. Check the area list above, or call with your postcode to confirm.

Why does my toilet keep blocking?expand_more

Common causes are wipes, a weak flush from a worn cistern valve, limescale in hard water areas, and pipework with too little fall. If it blocks more than once in a few weeks, have a plumber look for the underlying cause.

What if the blockage is outside my property?expand_more

We will tell you. If the cause is in an outside, shared or public drain, it may be the responsibility of a drainage company, the water company or the building owner. We do not carry out CCTV drain surveys or drain relining.

How can I stop my toilet blocking again?expand_more

Only flush toilet paper and human waste. Keep a small bin for wipes and sanitary items, use less paper per flush, and have a weak flush checked. A plumber can also check the pan connector and descale the rim if the water is hard.
