Residential Locksmith FAQs
Which locks do home insurers require?
It varies, so check the security section of your policy. Many insurers ask for a five-lever BS 3621 mortice lock on external timber doors, and a multipoint lock with a TS007 or anti-snap cylinder on uPVC and composite doors. We fit locks to these standards and can check what you have now.
What locks are best for a period front door?
Most Victorian and Edwardian timber doors suit a BS 3621 five-lever mortice deadlock, often paired with a British Standard nightlatch. We fit them carefully to protect the original door and can match brass, chrome or black finishes so the door keeps its character.
What locks do I need for a flat?
Flat front doors usually need a BS 3621 mortice lock or a nightlatch to that standard, plus a TS007 3-star cylinder if the door uses a Euro cylinder. Some buildings have fire door rules for flat entrances, so we check with you or the managing agent before changing anything.
Should I repair or replace a worn lock?
If the lock is otherwise sound, an adjustment or a new cylinder can be enough. Replacement is better when it is badly worn, damaged, below your insurer’s standard or has been tampered with. We check first, tell you plainly what we find and quote for the option that makes sense.
Do you change locks on uPVC doors?
Yes. Most uPVC and composite doors use Euro cylinders, which are quick to change. We measure carefully so the new cylinder does not stick out past the handle, where it is easier to attack, and we recommend a TS007 3-star rated cylinder.
Can you supply extra keys?
Yes. We supply keys with every new cylinder and can add extras. Restricted keys usually need proof of authority, because the maker controls copying. If every key has been lost, we can rekey or replace the cylinder so new keys work and the old ones do not.
Can you fit locks that open quickly from inside?
Yes. For exit doors we can fit thumbturn cylinders and other options that let you get out fast in an emergency, while staying secure from outside. We check that the door and frame suit the lock first, and explain any trade-off with your insurer’s requirements.
