Multipoint Lock FAQs
What is a multipoint lock?
A multipoint lock secures the door at several points along its edge, not just at the handle. Lifting the handle pushes hooks, bolts or rollers into keeps in the frame, and turning the key locks them in place. It seals the door better and is much harder to force than a single lock.
How much does a multipoint lock replacement cost?
Replacing a uPVC multipoint mechanism usually costs around £120 to £250 in normal hours, according to a 2026 BestBuilders guide, and longer or rarer mechanisms cost more. We identify your exact make and size first and give you a written quote before fitting anything.
How do I measure a multipoint lock?
You need the backset (edge of the door to the centre of the spindle), the centres (spindle to the centre of the keyhole), the faceplate width and the overall length. Getting any one wrong means the part will not fit, so we measure on site and match it for you.
The key turns but the door won’t open. What is wrong?
Usually the gearbox has broken inside, so the key and handle no longer move the bolts. A snapped cam on the cylinder can cause the same problem. Do not force the handle. We release the door, find which part has failed and replace it.
Why won’t my door lock unless I lift the handle?
That is how multipoint doors are designed: lifting the handle moves the bolts into position before the key locks them. If the handle will not lift, or the key will not turn after lifting, the gearbox may be worn, the door may have dropped or the keeps may be out of line.
Can a multipoint lock be repaired, or must it be replaced?
Often one part is at fault, such as the gearbox, a spring, the cylinder or a keep, and that part alone can be replaced. A full replacement is only needed when the strip or case is badly worn or damaged. We test first and always quote the repair option.
Is it dangerous to leave a faulty multipoint lock?
It can be. A door that does not fully lock leaves you open to burglary, and a jammed lock can stop you getting out in an emergency. If the door will not lock, call us and we will make it secure as soon as we can, including out of hours.
